Lake Kremasta

The artificial lake Kremasta was formed after the construction of the dam (1965) near the confluence of the rivers Acheloos, Agrafiotis and Tavropos (Megdovas).

The dam is 160 m high, 457 m long and its base is 670 m wide.  The hydropower station of Kremasta is one of the greatest engineering projects of the country and provides significant quantities of electricity.

The creation of the artificial lake had the effect of increasing biodiversity and improving climatic conditions of the region.

The bridge of Episkopi connects the regional sections of Aetolia-Acarnania and Evrytania.

The location “Tsagkaralona”, near the village of Fidakia in Erytania, offers magnificent views of the Kremasta lake and the Episkopi bridge.

The amazing sight of Kremasta lake can be enjoyed both from Episkopi in Evrytania – a modern but also picturesque village, built on a hill- and from the Tripotamos, also in Evrytania.  Near the village Tripotamos is the historic monastery of Tatarna, founded in 1555/1556 which was once known as the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni.

Special reference should be made to the bridge of Manolis, a historical preserved monument in Kremasta lake, which dates from 1654 and is partly covered at times, depending on the water level of the lake. According to tradition, the bridge owes its name to the master builder Manolis, who hailed from Dafni, Evrytania.

Moreover, lake Kremasta offers beautiful routes with canoe-kayak, enabling the fans of alternative forms of tourism to discover its hidden beauties.
